Mary In The Writings of St. Augustine

Mary is the perfect exemplar of the redemption carried out in Christ.  Christ has redeemed us freeing us from the sad consequences of evil:  of sin, of the dominion of the passions, of death.  This is Christian freedom which the Lord realizes in us according to the mysterious plan of his Provindence.  Freedom from sin in baptism, from the dominion of disordinate passions throught he constant outpouring of his grace, from death, when this enemy shall have been definitively vanquished at the end of time.

Mary too was freed from these evils, but in a way more noble, more sublime.  She was freed from sin because grace has prevented her from contracting it; she was freed from disordinate passions because whe is a perpetual virgin; finally, in a very radical way, she was freed from sin.  Mary is in heaven, beside her Son, in soul and body, an exemplar of the redemption.  What the Church waits for, she has received:  the fulness of grace, victory over the passions, and victory over death, that is, over corruption of the body in the tomb.

Mary is mother both physically of Our Head, and spiritually of His members because she cooperated in love in having us be reborn in the Church.  As eminent member, model and mother of the Church, Mary is the font of our hope and our joy.  We hope to be what Mary is and we attain it rhough the mediation of her maternal love.Mary is mother, that is, generosity, love, mercy.  A mother loves because of love; she loves through love.  If we wish to enter into the circle of this maternal love, we ought to go through the process by which she loved and continue to love.  It is a love illumined by faith, strong and loyal.  It is a love based on humility, that virtue by which we recognized ourselves as insignificant creatures in the hand of a Merciful Father who gives all and forgives all.  It is a love sustained by the joy of being children of God, that joy which exploded in Mary when in encountering Elizabeth, she entoned the Magnificat, a song of joy, of humility and of triumph.
